Lectures
All of us at Mathabane Books & Lectures look forward to working with you to arrange for Mark's visit to your campus to give a lecture or commencement address. When you contact us at lectures@mathabane.com or call Diana West at 631-902-5686, we can discuss all the details and logistics involved. If you plan to open the lecture to the public, we can provide you with publicity materials to ensure you get a good turnout.
After coming of age in one of South Africa's toughest ghettoes, Mark has risen through sheer determination and hard work to become one of America's most dynamic motivational speakers. We are always overwhelmed and gratified by all the positive feedback we hear from clients after he's spoken at their schools.
Mark's lectures have inspired and empowered thousands across the country in middle schools, high schools, colleges, universities, businesses and government. His message to students is clear: "If you stay focused, work hard, believe in yourself, and never take gifts such as books, libraries and caring teachers for granted, you can go as far as you want to in life -- you can reach the pinnacle."
Mark was nominated Speaker of the Year by NACA (National Association of Campus Activities), and he's appeared on dozens of talk-shows, including Oprah, Larry King, NPR, Today Show, CNN and Charlie Rose. His many articles on human rights, education and race have appeared in such publications as The New York Times, the Washington Post and USA Today.
Mark preaches what he practices and has lived. He believes that recognizing and affirming our common humanity is key to survival and achieving peace, and that education and knowledge are key to overcoming adversity, unleashing one's potential and achieving success in life.
Independent Schools, Public High Schools, Colleges, Universities and LibrariesStandard Lecture Format A reception is often held afterwards, during which copies of Mark's books are available for purchase. Book signings are popular with students, who enjoy having their books signed and getting an opportunity to chat one-on-one with Mark. Upon request, Mark can also lead an informal class discussion with a gathering of up to 60 students. This discussion is usually most effective if it is scheduled after the main lecture. If the main lecture is in the evening, the class discussion might take place the following morning. If the main lecture is in the morning, the class discussion usually follows immediately after the book signing. Publicity materials, such as a draft press release and photos, are provided free of charge to help you publicize the event to the community. The lecture fee ranges, depending on factors such as how much time Mark will be on campus and the number of lectures and class visits requested. Once you describe what you'd like Mark to do while on campus, I can provide a quote. To reduce costs, some schools take advantage of the following discounts.
