I'm a big believer in the power of knowledge, and in the importance of staying informed and making up one's own mind. There's nothing I hate more than mental slavery, intellectual despotism, or political correctness. That's why I'm a staunch advocate and defender of freedom of the press and of discussion, not only in my homeland of South Africa, or my adopted home of America, but around the world. The Internet makes it possible for anyone with the desire and diligence to become truly well informed. I still marvel over the fact that each morning, at the click of a button, I can read newspapers from virtually anywhere on the planet. These papers are often written from points of view that force me to think, to confront my own stereotypes about others, and above all, to learn from other people and cultures. There's nothing more exhilarating and more fulfilling in life than to have the opportunity to learn a little more each day. Life is not merely for eating and drinking. We also must nourish the soul and our minds, lest we remain nothing but brutes. By keeping up with world news, you can become truly global in your perspective and empathy. If you aspire to become a true learner and lover of knowledge, it helps to know other languages, such as Spanish, French, German, Zulu, Swahili, etc. I urge you to study a second language in high school or college while you have the opportunity. And don't just do the minimum to pass the test. Study on your own and practice speaking with others. Knowing another language is the key you need to truly understanding another culture from its own perspective. To enjoy a unique journey around the world, click on the marquee below.
